Last night on The Colbert Report, Stephen interviewed Andrew Solomon on his new book Far from the Tree: Parents, Children, and the Search for Identity. It sounds interesting! I think there’s something a little troubling about the way he defines “dramatically different,” because focusing on differences such as disability, criminality, mental illness, transgender experience, or prodigy seems to just further problematic ideas about normalcy. I haven’t read the book though, so I can’t know yet. Anyway, it does sound like the study is looking critically at the assumption that one’s children will be like them.
